the road is a ribbon
a path a highway a valley
today bridges and stone walls
yesterday arroyo and rockslide
tomorrow a sheeptrack
            a creekbed
a lane through gardens and fields
the road is
the Milky Way
a mountain pass a cliffside
a city street a sidewalk
the aisle of a church
a cemetery
            a stairway
a tunnel
a forest trail
the road is a rosary
the road is
purgatory and paradise
in a single day
pebbles asphalt mud dust
loam manure concrete grass
wildflowers
roots
flagstones cobblestones boulders
the road is
the Road of Stars
to the House of Saint James
